Why Would The Author Do This? English Language Question?

By business answers Posted in: business letter

This is to anyone who is good at analysing the English Language and Literature. Keep in mind that this story was written in 1897.
I have to analyse this Australian Gothic Horror Story called the With Three Phantoms by Guy Boothbay. I particuarly have to study the language, but i’m struggling to determined why Boothbay has used this:
“I date the whole business from one muggy, horrible night, such as can only be produced by Port Darwin in her Season of Torment.”
Why has placed “Torment” in CAPITAL letters? why would any writer during the 1800′s do this? What’s the intended effect i mean.
thank you so much.

  1. old lady Says

Unless you have misquoted, it looks as though only the first “S” and “T” in Season of Torment are in upper case. If that’s correct, it’s because this is a title – just as Christmas is a title, or Easter is a title.

  2. They’re Your Feelings Says

In all likelyhood, the author is referring to a specific event known to him as the Season of Torment. It could also be a fictional event the author is trying to make seem real to the reader. HP Lovecraft did this alot in his writing. Using a fictional event as a filler that the reader. The idea is that the reader might simply not have heard of it. Try going to Google and entering Season of Torment along with the location the story is set in. This may yeild a result that will explain the reference.
