Want To Become An Actor? Too Late 17?

By business answers Posted in: business university

Hi, I am a 17 year old Englishman living in a city not too far from London (90-120 mins on train), and I’ve always wanted to become an actor, but confidence has been a big issue in my life as I have next-to-none self-confidence. I’m too scared that I’m gonna look stupid or mess up, which i know is stupid because no actor in the world is perfect. I’m joining university in september (hopefully) to study business, but am thinking about joining some kind of acting society or something. I don’t want to do acting because of the fame nor the money (although thats good), but I want to do it for the enjoyment and fun. Anyways sorry for long paragraph, my question’s are; Is it too late to go after my dream?, How to overcome shyness etc.?, How do I come about doing this?
Thank You so much for any and all answers, much appreciated :D
P.s. I see people writing “10 points” after their questions, and I will do this also if you include how I go about doing this within your answer :D

There are some professional actors and actresses who don’t start training till they are in their mid to late twenties. It is definitely not too late. You just need to start training with a good acting instructor, and begin going to auditions for local/community theater.
I started acting at 11, and before then, I was probably the shyest person on the planet. Acting is one of the very best activities to help build confidence and overcome shyness. It does not disappear overnight, but as you get more and more used to the feeling of performing in front of people, you will slowly begin to notice that the feeling is disappearing.
To go on doing this, start with training. You can find it by putting “Acting Lessons in (Your City)” into the Google search engine. You need to be taking class at least once a week. Make sure the instructor gives you your share of attention (if it is a group class) and is well-experienced.
Once you have an instructor, you can begin going to auditions for local/community theater. This is how you will gain experience for your resume. Most local/community auditions can be found through your acting instructor, but it’s good to keep up with websites as well.
After 1-2 years of training and lots of local/community experience, you can consult with your instructor about finding an agent. He/she will probably know of some local ones that can book you commercial auditions, maybe a few auditions for bit parts in Film/TV once in awhile. This is only if you want to be a Film/TV actor. If your hopes are Broadway/West End, just keep going about like normal. Good Luck!

You are never too old to chase a dream unless you dream of being a child actor or model or anything else that requires you to be a child. At 17 you are still young so you can join an amateur dramatic society and see how you like it. Enjoy yourself .
I can’t say how you overcome shyness but sometimes it helps if you are playing someone else and wearing a costume -the shy real you can hide behind it and let the actor in you shine.

Never too old, never too young. Just do what you love. Some actors start when they’re in their 40s
