Outline a situation at work wherre you were required to consider the cultural or generational difference of staff in the workplace. What did you do to ensure all staff were treated with respect and at the same time were business standarda maintained?

This may have to be a hypothetical situation as most workplace environments are sensitive to culture and generational difference, and there are are laws, rules and policies regarding race, religious and age bias and discrimination. The best approach is as a third party who witnesses race, religion or age discrimination and takes affirmative action to defuse or mitigate the abusive behavior. For example, On day at lunch one on my coworkers began harassing another coworker because she had brought ethnic food for lunch. At first it seemed like harmless teasing, but soon crossed the line into racial slurs and stereotypes. It was offensive to both my coworker and myself, All my attempts to change the subject were ignored, and the atmosphere was growing more and more tense. Then I asked my coworker for a taste of her ethnic lunch, all thought it was not to my liking, I smiled and praised the great and unique flavor. This surprised the coworker who was teasing her and put an end to an all around distasteful situation. Best of luck The PracticaL Mentor
