Jehovah’s Witnesses Currently Pursuing A University Degree: What Do You Think Of These Quotes?

By business answers Posted in: business university

The following is a small sample of statements made by your brothers and sisters on Y/A regarding the topic of education beyond high school. How, if at all, would you justify your current enrollment in university courses given these arguments against it?
————————————–…
“Those with nursing and engineering degrees are ending up as waiters/waitresses cuz they can’t find work in their chosen field.”
“The only real reason people pursue higher learning is for money or power, not because they want to make the world a better place.”
“We recognize that in the times we’re living in now, additional education beyond high school is completely unnecessary and very unwise. “
“I would rather spend 4 years in full time ministry then 4 years studying secular material.”
“We Jehovah’s Witnesses have spiritual goals, not secular ones. So, to achieve our spiritual goals, we don’t go to colleges, but we learn by preaching and reading the Bible daily.”
“It has been statistically proven that those who go to college wind up not being able to use their degrees because the economy is so bad and there is no need for advanced jobs.”
“Higher education isn’t necessary to complete the task that Jehovah has given us to do because soon universities will have no place anymore.”
“What is the point of attending university for four years when you’ll just end up unemployed and struggling to pay off thousands of dollars of debt?”
“There have been countless studies to confirm that education does not lead to higher income.”
“If you go to college, you will exposed to the bad associations of lewd and lascivious sex and drinking at all times. Your spiritual life is in danger and your time is wasted.”
“Trying to get an education leading to a job in a business soon to go out of business is ludicrous. The whole world is going to go under. The only thing that will remain are those hoping in Jehovah.”
“Anyone who truly loves Jehovah would recognize that college would be detrimental to our faith.”

  1. Grandbabies are special Says

    All of them are true.

  2. Drake Says

You must be trolling because not mentally stable person would search for this many actual quotes by JW. Espectially since there are fewer JWs on here than quotes listed.
But anyways, I would say that college education can further their spiritual goals such as how Jesus commanded us to love and take care of each other. A doctor can do that much better than a high school graduate in most cases.

  3. teller of truths Says

We get all the education we need in the Bible to warn people of Gods upcoming day. The society never said we could not but was always advisable not to.People need to make the decision and realize whats more important.

  4. Duck Says

Only a fool believes that everything we know can be contained in the pages of a single volume.

  5. Victor B Says

Whoever says that people with qualifications in engineering and medicine can’t find jobs are utter morons.
In time of crisis, the only jobs that fare well are machine-fixers(engineers) and people-fixers(medical practitioners).
But thanks for exposing what the JW really are. A doomsday cult wary of its members coming into contact with people outside their cult.
They may be right if you’re majoring in “Medieval Mongol Music and Architecture” though.

  6. Rustic B Says

There’s a lot of ambivalence towards higher education amongst the Jehovah’s Witnesses. On the one hand, they want to present good appearances to the general public and not come across as being way outside of current cultural norms. For example, most thinking people know for a fact that a degree in mechanical engineering is going to lead to a job in that field rather than a position as a waiter at a cheap restaurant.
So Jehovah’s Witnesses try to moderate their extreme views when voicing them publically. They will even make bogus claims about there being “many” Jehovah’s Witnesses with Ph.Ds.’ and “many” medical doctors. They will say that there’s absolutely no prohibition or opposition to higher education within their religion and anyone who says otherwise is an “apostate liar.”
It reminds me of the differences between a Republican primary campaign and the campaign for the general election. In the primaries, the rhetoric is sharply conservative because they’re appealing to the party base. But in the general election, they tone it down and present themselves as moderates or compassionate conservatives. It’s pretty much a tactic they use to win votes.
So if you want to know what Jehovah’s Witnesses really teach about higher education, you need to examine their literature first hand or speak with former members who will be willing to give you a straight answer.
Anyway, their basic view is that a two year degree at a vocational school is acceptable, but a university degree ought to be avoided. That’s why the vast majority of JWs do not have university degrees and those who do, obtained them before joining the religion.

  7. Happy in the Truth Says

I do not disagree with any of them; they’re all quite true. However, you are selectively quoting Jehovah’s Witness responses. You’re making it seem as if we are totally opposed to university education. If you provided the full quotes in context, it would be fairer. As it stands, you are attempting to mislead people by taking quotes out of context. You guys do the same thing with our literature, so it is no surprise you would do this with the archived responses on Yahoo Answers.
