Who I am: I’m in my 4th year at university about to graduate with a B.S. in Energy policy.
I’ve been checking out some cool web designs like this page http://www.michaelnajjar.com/ and I realize that a page such as that probably takes a master programmer. However, I do think that I could conjure the skills to make a better webpage for my father or brother’s business’s (Pool/Spa and Contractor companies). What they have now is pretty remedial with pixelated pictures and all.
What does it take to upgrade a webpage myself? [money, program languages to know, web design tips (websites), anything]
I believe that even though we are in a somewhat rural area (below 100,000) the tech savvy crowd is growing exponentially and as a fun side project I think I could seriously help out my family’s financial situation. (We are one of the fastest growing counties in California)
Thanks for the feedback in advance.

If you Dad had th website designed then it may be copyright, if not you need the program and knowledge to build a website which is a course in itself.
I am very serious here when I say you are going to want to KNOW SOMEONE.
Just network. You will find someone who will get you what you need.
Sure. If you’ve got time on your hands, a reasonable amount of skill using computers and some design sense, you can pretty easily create a new website for your family’s businesses.
There are lots of tools out there that make building a feature-rich website pretty easy. I’m a self-hosted WordPress enthusiast myself, but there are many other platforms out there like Google site builder, Blogger, Squarespace, just to name a few. There are many, many more. Each of these platforms has their own pros and cons. Most of them have free plans where you can play with them to see which one meets your needs and abilities the best.
Even with the point and click sites, learning some HTML, Javascript, MySQL Database fundamentals, and PHP would help.
If you are serious about building business websites, learning about Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is probably the most important thing to help them get more business.
Even if you don’t think you need to do a full redesign of their sites, spending some time with their existing sites cleaning up the text and code, doing some SEO work, replacing those pixelated photos with nice crisp ones, and creating Facebook and Google Places listings will help your family’s businesses do a lot better.
There is lots to learn. Just remember, until you’re comfortable with what you are getting in to, don’t take their old sites offline. Play with the development in a sandbox, and when everyone is happy, migrate to the new site.
